How much does Etsy take from a sale?

Etsy does not take one flat percentage. A sale can trigger a listing fee, a transaction fee, payment processing, and sometimes an Offsite Ads fee. Those charges use different rates and do not all start from the item price alone.

Here is what each fee covers, what a real order looks like after the charges, and where to check the numbers for your own sale.

The short answer

The four fees to check

These are the main Etsy fees behind a U.S. sale. Your country, account, and the way the order was placed can change the final amount.

Listing fee

$0.20

Charged when a listing is published or renewed, including certain renewals after a sale. It can also cost money when an item never sells.

When the $0.20 listing fee adds up

Payment processing

3% + $0.25

The standard U.S. Etsy Payments rate per order. The percentage applies to the payment total, which can include shipping and applicable sales tax. Rates vary by country.

Offsite Ads

12% or 15%

Charged only on an attributed Offsite Ads order. The rate depends on the shop’s qualifying sales history; it is not a fee on every sale.

When the Offsite Ads fee applies

Shipping charged is not postage paid. Etsy can use the amount the buyer paid for shipping in its fee calculation. The actual cost of mailing the package is a separate expense you still need to subtract when checking profit.

What Etsy takes from a $30 order

A U.S. seller charges $25 for the item and $5 for shipping. No discount, gift wrap, sales tax, or Offsite Ads applies in this first example.

Item price$25.00
Shipping charged to buyer$5.00
Order revenue$30.00
Listing fee−$0.20
Transaction fee (6.5% × $30)−$1.95
Processing (3% × $30 + $0.25)−$1.15
Total Etsy fees−$3.30
Remaining before product and shipping costs$26.70

Now suppose the same order came through an Offsite Ad. That extra charge changes the amount remaining:

At a 12% Offsite Ads rate$23.10 remains$26.70 − $3.60 ad fee
At a 15% Offsite Ads rate$22.20 remains$26.70 − $4.50 ad fee

None of these remaining amounts is profit. You still need to subtract the product, actual postage, packaging, and any other costs of making the sale. The example assumes one $0.20 listing charge and no applicable sales tax; processing fees can differ when tax is part of the payment.

Read the number correctly

Etsy fees and your selling costs are different numbers

What Etsy charges

Listing, transaction, payment processing, and any applicable Offsite Ads fees reduce the amount from the order before you count your own costs.

What the sale costs you

Materials, product cost, postage, packaging, discounts, labor, and other expenses determine whether the money left after Etsy fees is actually worth the sale.

This distinction matters most when shipping or ads are involved. A $5 shipping charge is part of the order used in several fee calculations, even if the label costs you all $5 or more.

Check the fees before you settle on a price

Enter your item price, shipping charged, product cost, and Offsite Ads setting in the Etsy Fee Calculator. It shows the Etsy charges and the amount remaining after the product cost you enter. Check actual postage and other expenses separately before treating that amount as profit.

Common questions

Etsy fee questions, answered

Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?

Yes. Etsy’s 6.5% transaction fee includes shipping charged to the buyer. Payment processing also applies to the payment total, including shipping. The amount you pay for a label is a separate selling cost.

Are Offsite Ads fees charged on every order?

No. An Offsite Ads fee applies when an order is attributed to Etsy’s offsite advertising. Shops below the qualifying sales threshold can generally opt out; shops that have crossed it are required to participate. Check your own shop’s status before using either the 12% or 15% scenario.

Does the $0.20 listing fee apply if nothing sells?

Yes. Etsy charges the listing fee when you publish or renew a listing. A listing expires after four months and can be renewed manually or automatically, depending on your settings.

Is the amount after Etsy fees my profit?

No. Profit also depends on your product cost, actual postage, packaging, ads, and other business expenses. Use the Etsy Profit Calculator when you need to enter those costs separately.

Why might my Etsy statement show more charges?

Your shop may have Etsy Ads spend, currency conversion, shipping labels, taxes on fees, regulatory fees, or other account-specific charges. This guide covers the common U.S. charges in one ordinary sale, not every possible line in a payment account.
