Etsy vs Shopify Digital Break-Even Calculator

Last verified: September 2026 What does this mean?
This calculator was manually reviewed to confirm current platform fees, plan details, and assumptions as of September 2026.

Platforms may update pricing or terms at any time.

Digital products change the Etsy vs Shopify math because the cost structure is lighter, not because selling them is free.

There may be no postage, packaging, or physical inventory tied to each order. But Etsy still takes fees from every sale, while Shopify adds a monthly plan cost and any apps or delivery tools your store needs. As sales grow, those two cost structures begin to behave very differently.

Use this calculator to estimate the first whole monthly order where Shopify’s platform-related costs become lower than Etsy’s. You can account for your product price, listing volume, Offsite Ads exposure, Shopify plan and payment setup, and platform-specific expenses.

That crossover is not an instruction to leave Etsy. Etsy may still provide discovery and sales that a Shopify store would have to earn for itself. The result shows when the cost advantage changes so you can ask the more important questions about traffic, pricing, customer relationships, and whether a second sales channel makes sense.

Etsy vs Shopify digital break-even

Find the sales volume where Shopify becomes cheaper

Compare platform-related costs for the same digital order. The calculator finds the first whole monthly order where Shopify’s estimated platform costs become lower than Etsy’s.

Scope: Standard U.S. online rates and U.S. dollars. Sales tax is excluded. There is no shipping charge in this digital-product comparison. Shared product and production costs are omitted because they affect both platforms equally and do not change the crossover.

What this result means

Complete the required fields to see what is driving the platform difference.

The same digital order is compared on both platforms.

Monthly order volume changes how Shopify’s fixed costs are spread across sales.

This is a planning estimate, not a guarantee of savings, sales, or profit. It excludes sales tax, refunds, chargebacks, currency conversion, international and premium-card rates, Shopify tax charges, duties, income tax, and costs shared by both platforms. Etsy payment processing is modeled at the standard U.S. rate of 3% + $0.25. Confirm your actual rates before making a platform decision.

Use the crossover to make the next pricing decision

The crossover tells you when Shopify’s estimated platform costs become lower. It does not tell you how much an Etsy sale leaves you or whether your current price supports the profit you want. Check those numbers next.

Etsy vs Shopify digital products FAQs

Is Shopify better than Etsy for digital products?

Not automatically. Etsy can give digital sellers access to marketplace discovery without requiring a standard monthly platform plan. Shopify gives you more control over your storefront, customer journey, and product catalog, but you are responsible for bringing shoppers to the store.

This calculator compares platform-related costs. It cannot determine which platform will generate more sales for your particular products.

How many digital product sales does it take for Shopify to become cheaper than Etsy?

There is no universal number. The crossover depends on your product price, the number of listing units sold per order, Etsy Offsite Ads exposure, Shopify plan, payment setup, and any platform-specific per-order or monthly costs.

The calculator uses your assumptions to find the first whole monthly order where Shopify’s estimated platform-related cost becomes lower than Etsy’s. In some scenarios, Shopify may be cheaper from the first order. In others, it may never become cheaper.

Why can Shopify become cheaper as digital product sales grow?

Most Etsy platform fees rise with every order. Shopify also charges payment-processing fees, but much of its cost begins with a fixed monthly plan.

At a low sales volume, that plan cost is spread across relatively few orders. As volume grows, it is divided across more sales. Shopify becomes cheaper only when its per-order cost advantage is large enough to offset its fixed monthly costs.

Apps, digital-delivery tools, payment providers, and other Shopify-specific expenses can move that point considerably. Fixed costs do enjoy making simple answers less simple.

What Etsy fees apply to digital downloads?

Under the calculator’s standard U.S. assumptions, Etsy fees can include a $0.20 listing fee for each listing unit sold, a 6.5% transaction fee, and Etsy Payments processing of 3% plus $0.25 per order. Offsite Ads may also apply to attributed orders.

The calculator lets you adjust the number of listing units sold per order and add Etsy-specific per-order or monthly expenses. Sales tax is excluded from its calculations.

How are Etsy Offsite Ads included?

Choose the Offsite Ads rate that applies to your shop, then estimate the percentage of monthly orders that are actually attributed to those ads.

The calculator applies the selected rate only to that share of orders. It also caps the fee at $100 for an attributed order before averaging the cost across all modeled orders. This is more realistic than pretending every sale came through an Offsite Ad.

Why are product creation and other shared costs excluded?

A cost that is the same on Etsy and Shopify affects your total profit, but it does not change which platform has the lower platform-related cost. The same design time, software expense, or shared business cost appears on both sides of the comparison and therefore does not move the crossover.

Platform-specific expenses are different. Etsy-only tools, Shopify apps, digital-delivery charges, and other costs that apply to only one platform should be entered in the appropriate fields.

Does a lower platform cost mean Shopify will be more profitable?

No. It means Shopify has the lower estimated platform-related cost at the order volume entered.

Actual profitability also depends on whether Shopify can generate the same number of sales, what you spend to acquire traffic, conversion rate, refunds, customer support, discounts, and other operating costs. A cheaper platform that produces fewer orders can still leave you with less profit.

Does reaching the crossover mean I should leave Etsy?

No. The crossover is a cost signal, not a migration order.

Etsy may still be valuable for marketplace discovery even after Shopify becomes cheaper at the same order volume. You could keep Etsy, test Shopify as a second sales channel, and compare what actually happens before making a larger platform decision. The useful question is not simply which platform costs less. It is whether adding another channel gives your business better economics, more control, or less dependence on one marketplace.

Ready to spread the platform risk?

Your digital products do not have to depend on one marketplace.

Shopify does not have to replace Etsy. It can give your downloads, templates, and bundles a second storefront, a more direct path to customers, and greater control over how you package and sell your catalog.
