Shopify’s fee structure is cleaner than many marketplaces, but cleaner does not mean one-size-fits-all. Your plan changes the processing rate. If you use an outside payment provider, Shopify may add its own transaction fee on top of whatever the processor charges.

Both examples use the same $55.00 order on Shopify Basic. The only change is how the payment is processed.
Basic plan with Shopify Payments
$1.895 rounds to a $1.90 processing fee.
Shopify Payments handles the card processing, so there is no additional third-party transaction fee in this example.
What changes with an outside processor?
The provider rate is an example. Actual processor pricing varies.
The outside processor charges its own fee, and Shopify adds the Basic plan’s third-party transaction fee on top.

How Shopify fees work
Shopify does not take one universal fee from every order. The amount depends on what the customer pays, which plan you use, and whether Shopify Payments or an outside processor handles the payment.
Start with the full order total
The fee is generally based on the item subtotal after discounts, plus shipping charged and tax collected. That is why a $50 product can have fees calculated on more than $50.
Then follow the payment path
With Shopify Payments, Shopify charges the applicable processing rate for your plan. If you use a third-party payment provider, the outside processor charges its own fee and Shopify may add a separate transaction fee.

Basic, Grow, and Advanced use Shopify’s published U.S. standard online rates. Plus merchants must enter the Shopify Payments rate from their own agreement or Shopify admin because Plus processing rates are negotiated.
Agentic and legacy Starter selling are not included because they do not use the same full-store public rate table.
What is the difference between Shopify Payments fees and Shopify transaction fees?
Shopify Payments fees cover payment processing. They normally combine a percentage of the order total with a fixed charge.
A Shopify transaction fee is an additional percentage Shopify may charge when an outside payment provider processes the order. In that situation, the seller can pay both Shopify’s transaction fee and the provider’s processing fee.
Does the calculator include an outside provider’s processing fee?
Yes. Select “Third-party payment provider,” then enter the percentage and fixed fee charged by your processor.
The default provider rate is only an example. Replace it with the pricing that applies to your PayPal, Stripe, or other payment-processing account.
What amount are Shopify fees calculated from?
The calculator uses the item subtotal after discounts, shipping charged to the customer, and tax collected.
That full amount may be subject to payment-related fees even though shipping and collected tax are not necessarily income you get to keep.
Does this include the monthly Shopify subscription cost?
No. This calculator estimates payment-related fees for one online order. It does not spread your Shopify subscription, apps, or other monthly costs across your sales.
A higher plan can offer a lower processing rate, but the monthly plan costs more. The upgrade only becomes cheaper when the fee savings across your sales exceed that added monthly cost.
Is the amount remaining my profit?
No. It is the amount remaining after the estimated payment-related fees shown by the calculator.
Product cost, shipping expense, packaging, advertising, refunds, monthly Shopify costs, taxes you must remit, and other business expenses still need to come out. The sale total is the loud number. Profit is the one that pays the bills.
Why might my actual Shopify fee be different?
Shopify rates can vary by country, card type, payment method, plan, and account. International cards, premium cards, currency conversion, duties, Shopify Tax charges, chargebacks, and other services can also create costs that this calculator does not estimate.
Use the rate shown in your Shopify admin when it differs from the calculator’s standard U.S. rate.
Can this calculator tell me which Shopify plan is cheapest?
Not by itself. It shows how each plan’s payment rate affects one order, but it does not include the monthly subscription price.
To compare plans properly, calculate the fee savings across your expected monthly sales and compare those savings with the difference in subscription cost. A smaller percentage looks lovely, but it still has to earn back the more expensive plan.
A Shopify fee estimate is only half the comparison
