Sometimes the useful pricing question is not “What will Shopify charge?” It is “What do I need to charge so the payment fees do not reduce the amount I need to keep?”
This Shopify reverse fee calculator starts with your target take-home amount and works backward. It estimates the item price needed after Shopify Payments fees, or after both Shopify’s transaction fee and an outside processor’s fee when Shopify Payments is not used.
This is payment-fee math, not a complete profit calculation. Product cost, fulfillment, advertising, monthly plans, apps, taxes, returns, and other business costs are not deducted here. Once you have the required price, use the Shopify Profit Calculator to check whether the sale is actually worth making.
Start with the amount you want to keep after payment-related fees. Results update as you enter your numbers.

Start with the amount you need to keep
The required price and fee load will appear after the calculator has enough information.
Use the fee load to understand the gap
The reverse calculation tells you how much the customer must pay so the payment setup leaves your target amount. The fee load shows how much of the order is consumed before product and operating costs are considered.
The payment setup is taking a relatively controlled share of the order.
- Watch for
- Product costs, fulfillment, ads, discounts, returns, monthly plans, and paid apps that are not included here.
- Next move
- Run the required price through the Shopify Profit Calculator before treating it as a workable selling price.
Payment fees are creating a noticeable gap between what the customer pays and what you keep.
- Watch for
- Low order value, fixed processing fees, and the additional Shopify fee charged with an outside provider.
- Next move
- Check whether a bundle, minimum order, higher price, or different payment setup improves the economics.
The payment setup is consuming a large share of this order before normal business costs begin.
- Watch for
- Very low prices, double fee layers, premium provider rates, and assuming the resulting take-home is the same as profit.
- Next move
- Review the order value and payment setup before building a pricing strategy around this result.
This result covers payment-related fees, not profit
The ranges are practical planning signals, not universal rules. A low payment-fee load can still produce an unprofitable sale when product and operating costs are high.
What this calculator covers
- U.S. online standard Shopify Payments rates for Basic, Grow, and Advanced
- Seller-entered Shopify Payments rates for Plus
- Shopify’s additional transaction fee plus an outside processor fee for third-party payments
- Shipping charged to the customer as part of the payment-fee base
Collected sales tax is excluded from the target, order total, and payment-fee calculation. Shopify may charge payment processing on tax collected, so the final fee can be slightly higher than this estimate.
Rates vary by country, card type, payment method, account, and contracted pricing. Confirm the rate shown in Shopify admin before relying on the estimate. View Shopify’s current pricing.
A fee-covered price still needs to produce profit
Add product cost, fulfillment, advertising, monthly plan costs, and paid apps before deciding whether this price works for the business.
Example: what should you charge to keep $50 after Shopify payment fees?
You use Basic with Shopify Payments, want to keep $50.00 after payment fees, and charge $5.00 for shipping. The calculator works backward to the smallest cent-level order total that reaches the target.
The $50.00 remaining is not profit. Product cost, shipping cost, advertising, monthly Shopify charges, apps, returns, and other operating expenses still need to be deducted.
How Shopify reverse fee calculations work
A normal fee calculator starts with the order amount and subtracts fees. A reverse fee calculator starts with the amount you want remaining after payment-related fees and solves for the order amount required to produce it.
Required order amount = (target take-home + applicable fixed processing fee) ÷ (1 − applicable percentage fee rates)
The calculator then checks the result at cent-level pricing using rounded fee amounts. When shipping is charged separately, that amount is subtracted from the required order total to estimate the item price.
With Shopify Payments, the payment rate depends on the selected plan. With an outside payment provider, the calculator combines Shopify’s additional transaction fee with the percentage and fixed fee you enter for that provider. Shopify Plus merchants enter their contracted Shopify Payments rate.
Shopify Reverse Fee Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate what to charge after Shopify fees?
Start with the amount you want remaining after payment-related fees. The calculator works backward using the selected Shopify plan and payment method to estimate the total order amount and item price needed to reach that target.
Does Shopify charge payment fees on shipping?
Shopify Payments and third-party transaction fees can apply to the order amount, including shipping charged to the customer. This calculator includes shipping charged in the payment-fee base. It does not subtract the shipping cost you pay to fulfill the order.
Does this calculator include the monthly Shopify plan?
No. This calculator only works backward through payment-related fees. Monthly Shopify plans, paid apps, product costs, fulfillment, advertising, returns, and other business expenses belong in a profit calculation. Use the Shopify Profit Calculator after finding the required price.
How are third-party payment provider fees handled?
When you select a third-party provider, the calculator applies Shopify’s additional transaction fee for the selected plan and the percentage plus fixed fee you enter for the outside processor. Both fee layers are included in the reverse calculation.
Why do Shopify Plus merchants enter their own rate?
Shopify Plus payment rates can be contracted and account-specific. Enter the domestic online Shopify Payments rate shown in your agreement or Shopify admin instead of relying on a generic default.
Does the Shopify reverse fee calculator include sales tax?
No. Collected sales tax is excluded from the target, order total, and fee calculation because many sellers do not know the tax amount before pricing. Shopify may charge payment processing on tax collected, so the final fee can be slightly higher than this estimate.
Is the target take-home amount the same as profit?
No. Target take-home is what remains after the payment-related fees calculated here. Profit also subtracts product cost, fulfillment, advertising, monthly store costs, returns, labor, and other expenses that apply to the sale.
