When Is Shopify Cheaper Than Etsy? (Real Cost Comparison)

Last verified: September 2026 What does this mean?
This calculator was manually reviewed to confirm current platform fees, plan details, and assumptions as of September 2026.

Platforms may update pricing or terms at any time.

Etsy often looks cheaper at first. There is no monthly platform bill waiting for you before the first sale. Shopify puts that cost right in front of you, waving like a bill with excellent posture.

But monthly fee versus no monthly fee is only the beginning of the comparison.

Etsy takes platform fees from each order. Shopify combines a fixed monthly plan with lower modeled payment-processing costs per sale. As your order volume grows, Shopify’s monthly cost gets spread across more sales while Etsy’s fees continue to scale with each order. Eventually, those two cost structures can cross.

Use this calculator to find the first whole monthly order where Shopify’s modeled platform cost becomes lower. Your result is based on your item price, shipping charged, sales volume, Etsy listing quantity, Offsite Ads assumptions, and effective Shopify plan cost.

That crossover does not automatically make Shopify the better platform. It tells you when the platform math changes. Traffic, conversion, apps, setup, and store management still determine whether the potential savings are worth pursuing.

Find the sales volume where Shopify costs less

Compare the two platform-cost structures using the same order value and monthly volume. The calculator finds the first whole monthly order where Shopify’s modeled cost becomes lower than Etsy’s.

Scope: Standard U.S. online rates and U.S. dollars. This compares platform and payment costs, not profit. Product, fulfillment, and other costs that stay the same on both platforms are omitted because they do not move the crossover.

What this result means

Complete the required fields to see what is driving the platform difference.

Etsy adds marketplace fees to each order. Shopify begins with a fixed monthly plan cost, then adds payment processing per order.

This is a platform-cost crossover, not a recommendation to move. Traffic, conversion, advertising, apps, and total profit still belong in the full decision.

This calculator provides a planning estimate using standard U.S. rates. It excludes sales tax, product and fulfillment costs, refunds, chargebacks, Shopify apps, outside payment providers, premium or international cards, advertising other than modeled Etsy Offsite Ads, currency conversion, duties, and income tax. Confirm the rates that apply to your accounts before making a platform decision.

Next step: check the profit

Lower platform cost does not automatically mean better profit

This result shows where Etsy and Shopify platform costs cross. It does not show what you actually keep after product costs and the other expenses involved in making the sale. Compare the same product on both platforms before treating the crossover as a reason to stay, switch, or expand.

Shopify vs Etsy cost comparison FAQs

When does Shopify become cheaper than Etsy?

There is no single sales number that applies to every shop. Shopify becomes cheaper when the savings from its lower modeled per-order costs are enough to cover the monthly plan.

Your crossover depends on your item price, shipping charged, monthly order volume, Etsy listing quantity, Offsite Ads assumptions, and effective Shopify plan cost. The calculator shows the first whole monthly order where Shopify costs less.

Is Shopify always cheaper than Etsy at higher sales volume?

Under the standard U.S. rates modeled here, Shopify eventually becomes cheaper because its monthly plan is spread across more orders while Etsy continues charging marketplace fees with each sale.

That does not mean every real Shopify store will cost less. Apps, outside payment providers, premium cards, advertising, and other expenses can change the comparison.

Why does the calculator show the first whole-order crossover?

The exact mathematical crossover can fall between two orders, but monthly sales happen in whole orders. The calculator therefore reports the first whole monthly order where Shopify’s modeled cost is lower and checks the order immediately before it.

This gives you a practical threshold instead of a decimal that could make the cheaper platform look clearer than it really is.

Does shipping affect when Shopify becomes cheaper than Etsy?

Yes. Percentage-based fees are calculated on the amount the customer pays, including shipping charged. Because Etsy’s modeled percentage fees are higher, charging more for shipping can move the Shopify crossover to a lower monthly order volume.

The shipping cost you pay is not included because the calculator assumes it would be the same on both platforms. That cost affects profit, but not a like-for-like platform-cost comparison.

How do Etsy Offsite Ads affect the crossover?

Offsite Ads can make Shopify become cheaper sooner, but the fee does not apply to every Etsy order automatically.

The calculator lets you choose the applicable 12% or 15% rate and estimate the percentage of orders attributed to Offsite Ads. It uses those inputs to calculate a blended monthly cost, including Etsy’s $100 Offsite Ads fee cap per attributed order.

Do product and fulfillment costs affect this comparison?

Not when the same costs apply on both platforms. Product cost, packaging, and fulfillment still affect what you keep, but they do not move the platform crossover when the same amount is included on both sides.

If your product or fulfillment costs would change after moving to Shopify, compare those scenarios separately in the appropriate profit calculator.

Which costs are not included?

This calculator does not include Shopify apps, outside payment providers, premium or international cards, product and fulfillment costs, paid advertising other than the modeled Etsy Offsite Ads fee, refunds, chargebacks, taxes, or currency conversion.

It compares the platform-related costs needed to estimate the crossover. It is not a complete business profit forecast.

Does a lower platform cost mean Shopify is the better choice?

No. A cost crossover is a useful signal, not an instruction to leave Etsy.

Shopify still has to generate the monthly orders being modeled. Traffic, conversion, advertising, workload, customer ownership, and control over your store all matter. Use the result to decide whether Shopify is worth testing with your own products and audience.

Pricing first, platform second

A cheaper platform still needs a pricing strategy

Your crossover result shows when Shopify's modeled platform costs fall below Etsy's. It does not decide what your product should cost. This guide from Learn With Shopify explains how to think through pricing before you build another sales channel around a number that only looked reasonable.
